When you begin your career with the California State Auditor, you become an integral member of our team who helps improve government performance and accountability. Developing, training and supporting our talented employees in their career growth is a top priority for us. We take the time to provide meaningful experiences that build on the qualities you possess and provide opportunities that help you expand your knowledge, skills and abilities to develop professionally. Our professional development program includes several aspects:
Yes, you have two, both a "peer mentor" and a "career mentor"! Your mentors are ready to work with you to ensure a smooth transition and career growth at our office. Our peer mentors provide general guidance helping you acclimate to a professional office environment, while our career mentors inspire you to meet challenges and achieve success. They enable you to see a wider realm of opportunities, and they provide valuable advice to help you excel in your career. The California State Auditor is committed to our mentoring programs and they are instilled in our culture.
Either formally in a classroom setting, or informally "on-the-job", the California State Auditor offers various training opportunities to strengthen your skills and fulfill professional standards. As a member of our staff, you will participate in educational courses, including classes on auditing, writing, and applicable technologies. Our annual training plan offers flexibility and allows you to select classes that enhance your current skill set or provide opportunities to develop new skills. Further, all our staff receive on-the-job training to ensure staff can apply the knowledge and skills to their work. We value and provide you training to enhance your leadership, problem solving, and communication skills to help you succeed in your role within our office!
We have several options that can be rewarding both professionally and monetarily! We encourage staff to pursue a professional certification, such as the Certified Public Accountant (CPA) and reward staff who successfully pass the written exams. The California State Auditor bonus program awards a $4,800 bonus over three years to eligible employees who pass a professional certification exam, such as those listed below. Employees are encouraged to pursue professional certifications and employees may apply for up to two bonuses for passing the following exams:
Although professional designations are not required, we are committed to supporting our staff in obtaining professional certifications by reimbursing staff up to $2,000 for preparation courses for up to two approved certifications.
Staying on top of your profession is important—learning about new standards, new approaches, and new practices are just some of the benefits you can gain by joining and actively participating in professional organizations. When staff remain current with facets surrounding their profession, our work product is enriched. We encourage staff to participate in such professional organizations.
